Volleyball Leaves Whitewater Tournament 0-3

The Westminster volleyball team left the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Tournament this past weekend 0-3. The Blue Jays played nationally ranked UW-Whitewater (18th) and Washington University-St. Louis (11th). They also played St. Catherine on Saturday. The Blue Jays are now 9-9 for the season.

“Coming into this weekend we discussed that we wanted to come in and compete,” said Head Coach Curtis Madson. “We wanted to see how we stood up to some of the country’s best team.”

The Blue Jays were defeated 3-0 (16-25, 18-25, 8-25) by UW-Whitewater on Friday. The Blue Jays were held to 20 attacks, 6 coming from freshman Riley Lawrence. Freshman setter Kayla Reeg finished the match with 15 assists and 9 digs.

The Blue Jays took set three from Washington University- St. Louis Saturday morning. The Blue Jays lost 14-25, 11-25, 25-21, 13-25. Freshman Amanda Kiso hit .476 percent, finishing the four sets with 12 kills on 21 attempts. She also had 5 of the team’s 12 block assists. Reeg had 29 assists and sophomore Caroline Will had 22 digs.

The Blue Jays finished off the tournament with a 0-3 loss to St. Catherine (21-25, 21-25, 19-25). Sophomore Lexi Collier and Kiso had 8 kills each. Kiso finished the match with a .727 hitting and kill percentage and senior Caroline Abraham had a .500 hitting and kill percentage (6-0-12). Reeg has 28 assists and 12 digs. Collier led the Blue Jays with 1 block and 3 block assists.

“I think this weekend will go a long way in our maturation process as individuals and as a team,” commented Coach Madson. “I am proud of our girls and how they continually fought in matches even if they were out matched physically and playing teams with much more big match experience.”

The Blue Jays will see Fontbonne University Tuesday, October 15 at 7:00 p.m.  in St. Louis, Missouri.
