Men’s Soccer Loses Heartbreaker In Double Overtime

The Westminster men’s soccer team Men’s soccer lost a heartbreaker to Millikin University in double overtime Sunday afternoon in Decatur, Illinois. The 2-3 loss is their second double overtime loss this season and their third double overtime game. The Blue Jays return home with a 1-6-1 record.

The game went into the second half still tied 0-0. Freshman goalkeeper Raul Belman Romero had three saves and the Blue Jays took two shots on goal in the first half.

Millikin scores a goal just two minutes into the second half, giving them the 1-0 advantage on the Blue Jays.

Junior Muzi Shongwe scored in the 75th minute off an assist from senior Michael McDonough to tie the game back up at 1-1. Less than four minutes later, senior Zach Moore scored an upper 90 shot off of a penalty kick to give the Blue Jays the 2-1 lead.

Just 40 seconds later, Millikin headed in a goal over the Romero, tying the game up a 2-2 with 10 minute of play left.

The first overtime was scoreless. The game headed into the second overtime. With 4:11 left in the second overtime, Millikin was able to score and take the 3-2 win.

Romero (2-3) finished the game with 14 saves. The Blue Jays finished with eight shots on goal, all from different players.

The Blue Jays will travel to Elsah, Illinois on Saturday for their first SLIAC matchup versus Principia College. Play will start at 1:00 p.m.
