The Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) announced Aug. 12 that Dr. Tobias Gibson has been selected as an ambassador for CFR Education, the council’s college and high school instruction branch.
Gibson is among only 80 faculty and administrators from across the United States — and one of only three from Missouri — to be selected for the honor. Participants hail from 42 colleges and universities, including Duke, Pennsylvania State, New York, Georgetown and Johns Hopkins universities.
Ambassadors meet virtually from September through April while remaining in their current educational roles.
“Educators are on the frontlines protecting America’s democracy,” said Caroline Netchvolodoff, Vice President of Education at the Council on Foreign Relations, in an online CFR announcement. “The Ambassador program allows us to bring together those who are leading the charge in advancing students’ global affairs literacy so that we can learn from their wealth of experience.”
Gibson, who serves as Professor of Political Science and Security Studies at Westminster, said he is honored to be a part of the 2026-2027 CFR Education Ambassador Program.
“CFR cares deeply about foreign policy and international security issues and has invested in teaching future generations about these issues,” Gibson explained. “Participating in this program will also help build a network of like-minded educators who want to continue engaging with their students.”
Throughout the ambassador program, Gibson will learn how to use CFR teaching resources more frequently and effectively in the classroom.
“Because of networking opportunities, this program may also facilitate research options for me as well as my students, and it may provide students with more graduate program options,” Gibson said.
Ultimately, the CFR Education Ambassador Program will benefit both Gibson’s teaching and students’ understanding of international affairs.
“I am looking forward to bringing what I learn back to the classroom and sharing those resources with my students,” Gibson said. “This is a great opportunity to strengthen and publicize our excellent political science and security studies programs, which have placed Westminster graduates in important and varied positions of national security and foreign policy.”
