Blue Jays Down Fontbonne, 84-64

The Westminster men’s basketball team downed Fontbonne University, 84-64, Tuesday evening. The win snapped the Blue Jays’ three game losing streak and moved their St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) record to 4-2.

The first half was a back-and-forth game with the Blue Jays holding on to the close lead. With 3:23 left in the half, the Blue Jays jump-started their 9-1 run. With .4 seconds on the clock, the Blue Jays had the ball under their own basket. Senior Joe James tossed it inbounds and sophomore Mik Ebert tipped it in to send the Blue Jays into halftime with the 42-30 lead.

The Blue Jays grabbed a 22 point lead after eight minutes of play in the second half (62-40). Fontbonne managed to cut their deficit to 16 points with 1:25 left in the game, but the Blue Jays held strong and took the 84-64 win.

The Blue Jays shot 51.9 percent from the field, led by junior Verdis Lee Jr. with 16 points. Junior Brandon Moore added 15 points and five assists to the game, and James put in 13 points and four assists. Sophomore Kellen Brondel led the game with eight rebounds.

The Blue Jays will host MacMurray College Thursday evening, January 16, at 8:00 p.m.
