Students Raise Funds for College on Giving Tuesday

Westminster College Student Ambassadors raised $1,402.23 for the College on Giving Tuesday, the nationally designated philanthropic holiday this week dedicated to encourage giving and generosity to start the holiday season.

“I want to thank everyone so much for their generosity to the Westminster Fund,” says Roberta Burns, ’17, President of the Student Ambassadors. “I am so proud of each of my fellow students for giving back to the future of the College and overwhelmed with the positive response to the Giving Tuesday campaign. It is exciting to be on a campus where students support each other, the faculty, the athletic and academic programs and our career services.”

This marks the first time students have been asked to give to the Westminster Fund, which provides support for all aspects of the campus such as the general scholarship fund, academic initiatives, leadership programs and student activities.

167 different students contributed to the effort. The Delta Tau Delta fraternity house alone contributed $270 and a group of their alumni matched that amount.

Student Ambassadors had set a goal of raising $600 in student giving so to more than double that amount was a great success.

Westminster President Benjamin Ola. Akande had pledged to match student contributions dollar for dollar but was so moved by the student commitment to this initiative that he will now match the student gifts 2:1.

“I want to thank all of our students who gave so generously to this effort,” says President Akande. “It says a great deal about their love of Westminster for them to give back to the College as students.”

Another $13,411 was donated by alumni, faculty, staff, parents and National Churchill Museum donors bringing the total gift revenue to $14,813.23.
