Women’s Soccer Trumps Knox, 3-2
The Westminster women’s soccer team won their second straight game on Sunday with a 3-2 victory of Knox College. The win improves the Westminster Blue Jays’ season record to 3-2.
After 15:20 of play, junior Monica Bittner dribbled between two defenders and slid, pushing the ball into the goal to take a 1-0 lead. The Blue Jays held the lead until the Blue Jays fouled in the box, giving Knox a penalty kick. Knox scored on the penalty kick, tying the game up with 9:32 left in the first half.
Coming into the second half, the game was still tied up at 1-1. After 4:12 of play, junior Tayisah Pohtos crossed the ball to the left side of the goal and freshman Alex Ottoline punched it into the middle of the goal. The Blue Jays added a security goal when Pohtos dribbled up the middle, faked one way and shot the ball into the middle of the net in the 71st minute.
Knox scored a goal with less than two minutes left in the game, but the Blue Jays held them from scoring again and tying up the game.
The Blue Jays took 12 shots with 7 being on goal. Pohtos took four shots, and all four were on goal with one goal. Sophomore goalkeeper Ellen Woolsey (3-2) had 2 saves.
The Blue Jays travel to Indianola, Iowa on Friday, September 19, to play Simpson College. First touch is at 3:00 p.m.
