Westminster Homecoming Weekend 2013: Blue Jay Athletics Recap

On Saturday, October 19, the Blue Jay volleyball team kicked off the College’s Homecoming athletic competitions with a match versus Eureka College. The Blue Jays swept the Eureka Red Devils in three sets (25-18, 28-26, 25-15). Following the match, the Westminster volleyball program inducted 10 members into four elite clubs: 100 Ace Club, 1,000 Kill Club, 1,500 Dig Club and 2,500 Assist Club. The new members are previous student-athletes who achieved great milestones while playing volleyball for Westminster. For a full recap, visit here.

The Blue Jay football team hosted Iowa Wesleyan. The Blue Jays had a strong first quarter, but were held from scoring the remaining three quarters. The game ended with a Blue Jay 14-23 loss. For a full recap, visit here.

The Blue Jay men’s soccer team hosted Spalding University. After a very physical and scoreless first half, the Blue Jays looked to score in the second to continue their perfect SLIAC record. With just 8:06 left in the game, sophomore Jacob Appelbaum scored a goal off Andrew Presnell’s header. The Blue Jays held Spalding from taking another shot, ending the game with a 1-0 shutout. The Blue Jays extended their conference streak to 5-0, marking it as the best start Westminster has had to a conference season since joining the SLIAC in 1998. For a full recap, visit here.

The women’s soccer game followed, but the outcome was not as pleasant. The Blue Jays tied the game up at 1-1 in the 77th minute, but Spalding took back the lead just 30 seconds later. The Blue Jays ended up losing 1-3 to end the Homecoming day. For a full recap, visit here.
