Volleyball Grabs Two Wins At MacMurray Quad
The Westminster volleyball team brought home two wins from the MacMurray Quad Saturday afternoon. The Blue Jays swept Iowa Wesleyan 3-0 in the first match of the day, followed by a 3-0 sweep of MacMurray. They are now 14-10 overall and 9-5 in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC).
The first set against Iowa Wesleyan was close, but the Blue Jays pulled out a 25-21 win. Set two was close, but a kill by sophomore Lexi Collier ended the set, 25-19. The Blue Jays came out strong in set three; freshman setter Kayla Reeg had two service aces to give the Blue Jays a 4-0 lead. The Blue Jays took a strong lead, but Iowa Wesleyan fought hard to stay in the match. The Blue Jays overpowered them and took set three 25-17, winning the match.
Freshman Riley Lawrence led the Blue Jays with 17 kills and a .452 hitting percentage. Reeg had 40 digs and sophomore libero Caroline Will finished with 16 digs. Collier had three block assists and a .500 hitting percentage.
The Blue Jays took a 30 minute break before hitting the court to face MacMurray. The Blue Jays trailed MacMurray 17-20 in set one before a timeout was called. The Blue Jays fought back and a kill by freshman Amanda Kiso gave the Blue Jays the 23-22 lead. MacMurray took the 24-23 lead, but a MacMurray hitting error and ball handling error gave the Blue Jays the 25-24 lead. A block by Kiso and freshman Mallory Hubbard ended set one with the 26-24 win. The Blue Jays took an 8-3 set two lead and continued to stretch the lead to 17-9. A 7-0 run was halted by a Blue Jay serving error, putting the Blue Jays up 24-10. MacMurray stole one more point before the Blue Jays ended the set, 25-11. In set three, two service aces by Hubbard gave the Blue Jays the 8-6 lead, followed by a 5-0 run (13-6). The Blue Jays held the lead, but MacMurray was not far behind. The Blue Jays pulled out the set three win, 25-22.
The Blue Jays finished the second match with a .358 hitting percentage, led by Collier with a .600 hitting percentage. Kiso had four block assists and two block solos and Hubbard finished the match with three service aces.
The Blue Jays will host Fontbonne on Tuesday, October 29, at 7:00 p.m.
