Senior Spotlight: Karley Long and Sydney Sexton

The Center for Career Development sat down with two Westminster College seniors to learn about their plans for after graduation.

With graduation quickly approaching, many students have been taking advantage of the resources offered in the Center for Career Development. These resources include resume reviewing, mock interviews, individual meetings, and multiple online resources that help students find jobs and internships. Sydney Sexton, a senior from Independence, MO, used Westminster’s resources to secure her current job.

Sydney is majoring in Accounting and International Business, and she already has a job lined up after graduation in May. Sexton will be working as a tax associate for Grant Thornton in St. Louis, MO. She says it was the Center for Career Development that helped her get to where she is now. “Meg Langland tweaked my resume so it looked really professional! The Center for Career Development also connected me with Advanced Technology Services (ATS) for my internship.”

While Sexton is involved in multiple organizations such as Alpha Lambda Delta, Delta Mu Delta, and the Honors Commission where she serves as President, she tells other students to get engaged on campus. “Take as many internships as possible, and go to the (accounting) summer leadership camps.” She continues, “Put your foot in every door, start early, and talk to alumni to see what path they took.”

Although Karley Long from St. Louis, MO will be walking across the stage in May of 2018, Karley graduated in December of 2017. Karley has already hit the ground running with a full-time position as a District Manager Trainee with Aldi. Long was a Business Communication major with minors in English and Business Administration. Karley left a positive mark on campus, where she was involved in many leadership positions with organizations such as Kappa Alpha Theta, Alpha Chi, Blue Blazers Investment Committee, and the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.

Prior to obtaining a position with Aldi, Long completed summer internships with the company and became a campus ambassador for them during the school year. She utilized the resume reviewing offered by the Center for Career Development and says it was beneficial. “It helped with the different positions I was applying for, whether it was for internships or with certain organizations.” Long also completed internships with Quincy Herald-Whig and Westminster’s Center for Career Development.

While Long has already started her position with Aldi in St. Louis, she leaves behind some advice for other students. “There’s no time to waste. Seek help, do what you’re good at, and do what you like!”
