Men’s Soccer Grabs Win In Home Opener

The Westminster men’s soccer team grabbed a 2-1 win in their home opener with Rhodes College on Saturday. The Blue Jays are now 1-1 on the season.

The first half of the game was scoreless, but sophomore Tripp Sheehan scored his second goal of the season with a shot to the right corner of the net off a pass from freshman Daniel Barone to take the 1-0 lead in the 62nd minute.

Sophomore Drew Cook beat the defender and shot the ball into the right side of the goal to score in the 65th minute to give the Blue Jays the 2-0 lead.

Rhodes scored in the 71st minute to cut the Blue Jays’ lead to 2-1, but the Blue Jays’ held them from scoring in the final 19 minutes.

Sophomore goalkeeper Raul Belman Romero received the win. He finished the game with six saves and allowed only one goal.

The Blue Jays travel to Clarksville, Ark. next Saturday to play the University of Ozarks at 1:00 p.m.
