Senior Leigh Ann Lutz rewrites the Westminster three-point career record after going 5-11 from the three-point line during Wednesday’s 63-77 conference loss to Iowa Wesleyan College. The previous record of 194 three-pointers was outdone in the beginning of Lutz’s senior year; she now has 196 career three-pointers.

The Westminster Blue Jays start off conference play 0-1 after the loss and are now 1-4 overall.

“We know we’ve got work to do to be here we want to be in the end, but it is still early,” commented Lutz. “I’ve got all the confidence in the world in my teammates.”

The Blue Jays took the quick 9-2 lead just 1:38 into the game, but the Iowa Wesleyan Tigers tied the game up, 9-9 minutes later. The Tigers tied the game up once more before taking the lead with 11:57 left in the first half. The Tigers managed a 15-0 run before a three pointer by Lutz put an end to it with 1:34 left in the half.

The Blue Jays headed into halftime trailing 25-38.

The Tigers held the lead for the second half, taking a 20 point lead with 14:03 left in the game. The Blue Jays cut the deficit to 12 points, but the Tigers held strong and defeated the Blue Jays 77-63.

When asked about tonight’s game, Head Coach Tracey Braden stated, “We need to continue to work on defense, being consistent on both ends and playing through mistakes.”

Lutz led the Blue Jays with 23 points after shooting 50 percent from the field and going 4-4 from the foul line. Sophomore Jen Herndon added 12 points and led the Blue Jays with 6 rebounds. Junior Danielle Williams and freshman Andrea Zalis chipped in 5 rebounds a piece.

The Blue Jays will be back in action on December 14 as they travel to Elsah, Illinois to play their second conference game against Principia College. Game time will be at 1:00 p.m.
