What is your current career position?
I was an ob/gyn but retired from clinical medicine in 2018. I work part time as a physician clinical reviewer for Magellan Health.
Please describe your current work.
I perform medical reviews of service requests to see if they meet medical necessity guidelines.
What are your future goals?
I would like to continue to work part time for a while and travel more.
Did your liberal arts education allow you to uncover particular passions that you’ve carried into your career?
Even though I was a science major, my favorite classes were the social science classes. What I learned in my psychology, sociology and religion classes was so important in my career as a physician.
Were any relationships at Westminster particularly influential in helping you find clarity of purpose?
The sororities at Westminster were founded during my first year. I joined Kappa Alpha Theta, and the relationships that were created with the other women in the sorority were influential in helping me become who I am today and continue to be important in my life. I have known these women for 34 years now.
What did you learn about leadership while at Westminster, and how has that translated into your life since graduation?
I think leading by example is important. The old saying “your actions speak louder than your words” is so true. At Westminster, I learned that leadership is supporting and encouraging others to do their best. Of course, this has been helpful in my career and family life.
What does success mean to you?
Happiness.
What is it about Westminster that makes it the kind of community that empowers students to discover their purpose and find success?
Westminster has excellent faculty and support staff who all want to help you to succeed. They encourage you to be your best self and offer opportunities to explore your interests. I think the liberal arts education is so important for young students to be exposed to other points of view and other fields outside of their proposed field of study.
Do you recommend Westminster to prospective college students?
I do recommend Westminster to students. The education as Westminster is excellent. The low student-to-teacher ratio allows you to get to know your professors. Having a smaller student body allows more opportunities for participation and leadership in clubs, sports and other activities.
Favorite Westminster faculty member?
Pat Kirby. He was so helpful to the women students, giving us guidance and support throughout our time at Westminster. When a group of us returned to Westminster for our 25th reunion, he remembered us all very well and recalled incidents from our time on campus.
Favorite spot on campus?
The Winston Churchill Memorial. I worked there as a tour guide one summer. It is a wonderful place to learn about a great man, a great leader, and also about the beginning of the Cold War.
Last book you read?
I have mostly been listening to audiobooks. Michelle Obama’s memoir Becoming was a recent listen.
Favorite movie?
Forrest Gump is my favorite movie.
Favorite app?
The Podcast app is my favorite. I especially enjoy podcasts of This American Life and The Moth
Favorite way to spend a Sunday?
Reading the paper, having a latte at the local coffee ship, walking in Forest Park, enjoying time with my family.
