Women’s Soccer Secures Spot In SLIAC Tournament With Shutout Over MacMurray
The Westminster women’s soccer team secured a spot in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic (SLIAC) Conference for the first time since 2006 with a 4-0 shutout victory over MacMurray College Saturday afternoon. The Blue Jays are now 8-6-2 overall and 5-2-2 in conference, earning them fourth place.
Junior Ashley Schimmel put the Blue Jays on the board with a left-footed strike off a pass from freshman Honor Kehde in the 11th minute. Junior Eileen Koppy had a shot on goal in the 18th minute, but the MacMurray goalkeeper punched the ball out. Junior Tayisah Pohtos took advantage and knocked the ball in the goal to bring the score to 2-0.
The Blue Jays took five more shots on goal, but could not get past the goalie.
Senior Nyima Njie scored a goal in the 51st minute to take the 3-0 lead over MacMurray.
With 20 seconds remaining in the game, senior Monica Bittner placed her shot from sophomore Adrienne Ebersole just out of reach of the goalie, scoring the fourth and final goal of the game.
The Blue Jays took 20 shots on goal throughout the game. Bittner took five shots on goal and scored one goal. Freshman Alex Ottoline and Koppy took four shots on goal.
Sophomore goalkeeper Ellen Woolsey is credited with the shutout win.
The Blue Jays will travel to Webster University for the semifinal round of the SLIAC Tournament on Wednesday, November 5. Information about the Tournament will be released soon.
