Women’s Basketball Propels In Second Half To Lift Win Over MacMurray

The Westminster women’s basketball team outscored MacMurray College, 47-35, in the second half to grab the 71-58 win Thursday evening. The Westminster Blue Jays are now 4-3 in St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) play and 6-7 overall.

The Blue Jays trailed throughout the first half, but senior Leigh Ann Lutz hit two three-pointers in the final minute to pull the 24-23 lead heading into halftime.

Just four minutes into the game, a three-pointer by freshman Andrea Zalis sparked a 20-3 run for the Blue Jays. A steal by freshman Mariah Hernandez, passed up to Lutz, followed by a three-pointer by sophomore Sadie Theroff gave the Blue Jays a 26 point lead with 6:34 left in the game.

In the final two minutes of the game, MacMurray pulled a 9-0 run, but the Blue Jays took the 71-58 win.

Theroff led the Blue Jays with 14 points, while Lutz chipped in 13 points. Lutz and junior Danielle Williams dished in five assists each. Theroff, Zalis and sophomore Tylere Goans each had six rebounds.

The Blue Jays host Blackburn College on Saturday, January 18. Tip off for the women’s game will be at 3:00 p.m.
