Women’s Basketball Overpowered By Wartburg

The Westminster women’s basketball team was overpowered by Wartburg College Tuesday evening after the game was delayed an hour due to a citywide power outage. The Blue Jays fell 61-74, bringing their overall record to 1-3.

A slow start to the game left the Blue Jays up 6-0 four minutes into play. They held the lead until the Wartburg Knights made a jump shot to grab the 10-8 lead 9 minutes in. The lead bounced back-and-forth, but the Knights 13-0 run secured the lead with 2:36 left in the first half. The Blue Jays cut the deficit to 25-36 heading into halftime.

The Blue Jays continued to cut the deficit in the second half. A three-pointer by senior Leigh Ann Lutz, quickly followed by a three-pointer by sophomore Sadie Theroff, brought the Blue Jays within 6 points, 31-37. The Blue Jays kept pace, but with 6:44 left in the game, the Knights started to pull away and took their largest lead of the game (16 points). The Blue Jays finished out the game, falling 61-74.

Sophomore Mackenzie Haddox led the Blue Jays with 16 points after going 7-13 from the field. She tallied 4 assists and 2 steals. Sophomore Jen Herndon led the Blue Jays with 6 rebounds.

The Blue Jays are back in action on December 4 in Mount Pleasant, Iowa as they take on their first conference opponent, Iowa Wesleyan, at 6:00 p.m.
