Westminster Group Attends Regional Health Education Conference

Members from The Wellness Center, Peer Health Educators and the Blue Jay Athlete Mentors attended a two-day Meeting of the Minds Conference April 6-8 in Kansas City.

This conference brought together 6 states of prevention specialists, law enforcement officers, students, and health professionals working on College/University risk management and prevention education.

Meeting of the Minds is a regional prevention and health education conference for college and university peer educators, their advisors, administrators and campus and community law enforcement. Some of the brightest experts in college health and campus safety present effective strategies, model programs and best practices for attendees to take back to their campuses and communities.

Keynote presenters included Kevin Hines, who provided messages of hope and suicide prevention by sharing his story of survival.  Kevin is one of 37 people to ever survive a suicide attempt from jumping off of the Golden Gate Bridge.

Darrell Scott, father of Rachel Scott a victim of the 1999 Columbine High School shooting, shared Rachel’s Challenge – a move for a chain reaction of kindness.

Two Westminster College counselors, Reuben Faloughi and Jonathan Ferguson, presented at the conference.

Other WC members attending included faculty/staff Amanda Gowin, C.C. Cassell, Anne Rulo, and freshmen Emily Davidson from Houston, MO and Yusuf Nuur from Maroodi-Jeex, Somaliland; sophomores Kelsey Ray from Dixon, MO and Nikki Testerman from Spring, TX; junior F. Shafa from The Maldives; and senior Mallory Hubbard from St. Louis, MO.

This is an annual conference that is part of Westminster’s Partners in Prevention grant professional development.
