FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Fulton, Mo. – Aug. 12, 2024: For the first time, Westminster College will host the Seventh Annual Callaway Chamber of Commerce Teachers Appreciation Event, which will take place from 12 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 15 in Champ Auditorium.

The event is in cooperation with The Callaway Bank, presenting sponsor.

More than 550 area K-12 educators will gather on campus for a keynote address by performer Dan Meers, the official KC Wolf mascot of the Kansas City Chiefs.

The event will also include light refreshments provided by Fresh Ideas, informational booths and a variety of drawings. Applications for the annual Innovative Teacher’s Grant, sponsored by Westminster College and William Woods University, will also be available. The $500 grant is awarded each year to two K-12 Callaway County educators.

Dr. Ingrid Ilinca, Vice President, Chief Academic Officer, Provost, and Chief Student Retention Officer, said Westminster is excited to host the Teachers Appreciation Event this year because of the College’s firm commitment to future educators, which is exemplified by its many recent Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) awards. This year, Westminster was one of only 15 four-year colleges and universities out of 100 applicants to receive a $70,000 Developing an Educator Workforce that Expands Yearly (DEWEY) Award. DEWEY recognizes teaching programs that actively work to strengthen retention and increase the number of teachers in Missouri.

The College also is a proud participant in DESE’s Grow Your Own program, which supports education majors who student teach, and commit to teaching, in local schools.

“We are so pleased to host the Teachers Appreciation Event because of our strong ties to the Callaway Chamber of Commerce and Callaway County schools, which are always so eager to invite our education majors into their classrooms each year,” Ilinca said. “We are looking forward to welcoming area teachers on our campus to rest, rejuvenate and celebrate the beginning of the 2024-2025 academic year.”
