Westminster Alpha Chi Honor Society Receives High National Recognition

The Westminster Missouri Delta chapter of Alpha Chi has received word from the national office that it has been selected for the 15th year in a row for the Star Chapter designation. This recognition is only given to the top Alpha Chi chapters in the nation.

“This is truly a great achievement for our chapter,” says Dr. David Jones, Acting Senior Vice President and Dean of  Faculty. “Alpha Chi is a tremendous academic honor society for promoting scholarship and service among our students.”

Alpha Chi is a national college honor society that admits students from all academic disciplines. Membership is limited to the top 10 percent of an institution’s juniors, seniors, and graduate students.  Some 300 chapters, located in almost every state and in Puerto Rico, induct more than 11,000 members annually.

The objectives of this prestigious academic honorary society, which was nationally established in 1922, are the stimulation, development, and recognition of scholarship and those elements of character that make scholarship effective. The name Alpha Chi is derived from the initial letters of the Greek words for truth and character.

Alpha Chi is distinctive in that it involves members in all aspects of its operation: chapter officer leadership, student representation on the National Council, local chapter event planning, and presenting scholarly programs at national conventions.

Star Chapters are selected for their scholarly activities and their member recruitment. The award honors chapters that have met several criteria: inducting members locally, sending at least one faculty member and one student to the annual convention, having at least one student presentation on the convention program, nominating at least one student for a national Alpha Chi fellowship or scholarship and sponsoring at least one on-campus program in promotion of scholarship.
