Women’s Basketball Shut Down By Elmhurst

The Westminster women’s basketball dropped their second game of the season to Elmhurst College, 87-56. The Westminster Blue Jays return home from the opening tournament with a 1-1 record.

Elmhurst put the first five points on the board, but the Blue Jays managed to bring score four points to bring the game to 5-4. With 5 minutes off the clock, Elmhurst hit a 11-0 run. A layup by sophomore Krista Armontrout put a stop to their run, but Elmhurst proceed to take a 19 point lead with 3:19 left in the half. Heading into halftime, the Blue Jays trailed 43-26.

Senior Danielle Williams hit a short jumper coming out of halftime, and junior Mackenzie Haddox score nine points in the following two minutes to bring the score to 47-37. The momentum swung in Elmhurst’s favor with a 10 point run to take a 20 point lead, 57-37, and they never looked back. Elmhurst scored a jump shot with 22 seconds remaining in the game to bring the score to 87-56, and the Blue Jays were unable to score again.

Three Blue Jays scored in double digits. Junior Kasey Gatson led the way with 15 points, followed by Haddox and sophomore Andrea Zalis with 14 and 13 points, respectively. Zalis grabbed 8 boards.

The Blue Jays travel to Wartburg College on Tuesday, November 25 for their next contest. Game begins at 5:00 p.m.
