Volleyball’s Win Streak Continues With 3-1 Victory Over Fontbonne

The Westminster women’s volleyball team keeps their streak alive with a 3-1 win over Fontbonne University Tuesday evening. The Blue Jays’ 6-0 win streak improves their conference record to 11-1 and their overall record to 13-8.

The scores were 25-17, 25-19, 25-27, 25-20.

The Blue Jays started out slowly, but a kill by junior Lexi Collier gave the Blue Jays the 9-8 lead. Four kills from freshman Hannah Marshall, along with a kill by junior Caroline Will gave the Blue Jays a five point lead, 18-13. A service ace by Marshall put the Blue Jays up 19-13, forcing Fontbonne to take a timeout. A kill by Collier put the ball in Westminster’s hands with the Blue Jays’ up 23-17. A kill by sophomore Mallory Hubbard ended the set with a 25-17 Blue Jays win.

Coming out of the set one win, the Blue Jays pulled a 6-0 set two lead, but Fontbonne answered back with a 5-0 run of their own. With kills by Collier, sophomore Riley Lawrence and Marshall, the Blue Jays struck a 5-0 run to take a 15-9 lead. Fontbonne came within one point, 18-17, but the Blue Jays answered back with three more kills to take back a strong lead. A kill by sophomore Kayla Reeg brought the Blue Jays to game point, but a service error halted the set win. With the score 24-19, Fontbonne put an attack into the net to end the set.

With the Blue Jays leading the match  2-0, Fontbonne fought to stay in the match. After a four point run by Fontbonne, the Blue Jays called a timeout. Coming out of the timeout, Marshall put down a kill, followed by two service aces to put the Blue Jays down by one, 11-10. An 8-2 Fontbonne run forced the Blue Jays to call their second timeout (19-12). The Blue Jays pushed their way back into the game, tying it up at 23-23. Two kills by Lawrence gave the Blue Jays the 25-24 lead, but a service error tied the set back up. Fontbonne ended the set with a service ace, 27-25, bringing the match to 2-1.

Set four was close in the beginning, but Fontbonne hit a 5-0 run to take the 14-11 lead. Coming out of a Westminster timeout, Fontbonne put down a kill to take a 15-11 lead, but Westminster followed with a four point run to tie the set, 15-15. The Blue Jays were able to pull the lead until a kill by Marshall and an attack error by Fontbonne (20-19). A kill by Collier and a block from Kiso and Lawrence put the Blue Jays up 22-20. After a Fontbonne attack error, they called a timeout. A kill by Lawrence put the set to match point, and with game point on the line, the Kiso and Lawrence duo blocked the Fontbonne attack again to win the set, 25-20.

Marshall led the Blue Jay attack with 18 kills, while also leading from the line with 5 service aces. Collier finished the match with a .368 hitting percentage (9-2-19). Reeg led the Blue Jays with 46 assists and 17 digs, while adding 4 block assists to the mix. Kiso added six block assists to the 3-1 win.

The Blue Jays travel to Greenville College on Thursday, October 16, to play in the SLIAC Game of the Week. First serve is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
