Westminster Women’s Basketball to Hold Classroom on the Court

By Kirsten Carney, Westminster Sports Information Director and Social Media Manager

Westminster women’s basketball is set to host the program’s first-ever “Classroom on the Court” event December 17 at 11 a.m. in conjunction with the team’s game against Nebraska Wesleyan.

The Blue Jays have invited Fulton public school fifth-graders and faculty and staff from Bush Elementary, Bartley Elementary, and McIntyre Elementary. The Historic Gym expects to host nearly 400 area youth for the game.

“Classroom on the court is a great chance to expose the game of women’s basketball to our area youth and an amazing opportunity to showcase Westminster College and our beautiful campus,” said Westminster Head Women’s Basketball Coach James Arnold.  “It’s going to be a great atmosphere and I know we as a team are looking forward to it.”

The fifth-graders are expected to begin arriving at early as 10:30 a.m. to start packing the bleachers to cheer on the Blue Jays. The Westminster Student Ambassadors will be on hand to greet the students as they enter the gym along with assisting in their departure. Along with the game, timeouts and halftime events will feature contests between students and teachers and a message from Winston the Blue Jay about bullying and treating others well.

“When I shared this information with our fifth grade staff, they were super pumped and thought our students would love this opportunity,” said Connie Epperson, Principal at Bartley Elementary. “The bonus for us is that our students get to be on a college campus and they will get to witness sportsmanship at that level.”

The Westminster women’s basketball team will high-five the youth spectators on their way out of the gym and back to their own classrooms. Students will be provided snacks, a beverage, and a collectible game day program with special activities inside.
