Topic and Dates Announced for 2016 Hancock Symposium
Westminster College officials have announced the topic and dates for the upcoming Hancock Symposium in the fall.
“Audacious Ingenuity: Pushing the Boundaries of Science” will be presented September 14-15 on campus.
The Hancock Symposium is a yearly event at Westminster College presented by The Churchill Institute of Global Engagement. Classes are suspended for two days so the entire Westminster community can attend lectures, panel discussions and presentations by noted experts on one particular subject of global interest. The public and media are also invited to attend.
“In this Hancock Symposium, we will explore how scientific inquiry, deduction and passion have shaped the world in which we live,” says Dr. Dawn Holiday, 2016 Hancock Symposium Committee Chair and Professor of Biology and Environmental Science. “This Symposium will enable students and the Westminster community to appreciate how science has made the complex seem simple and to appraise where the global community stands as we edge further into new scientific frontiers.”
The Symposium Committee, which is comprised of Professors Holliday, Kurt Jefferson, and Jim Concannon, staff member Christin Fort and students Chris Halsey, Isaac Coronel, Ella Leslie and Harmony Nelson, are currently contacting plenary speakers and discussing breakout sessions and lecture possibilities.
“We can see science at work every day when we take a moment to enjoy the natural beauty around us, through medicine and technological advances protecting the health of all living things to the exceptional few who cross boundaries and push the limits to fight for a better tomorrow,” says Dr. Holliday.
The Symposium takes its name from David Hancock, Class of ’67 and former Westminster Board of Trustee member, who has supported the Symposium since its inception and in 2013, provided an endowment that will perpetuate the Hancock Symposium.
The 2016 Hancock Symposium will be the 11th in the series.
