Last weekend three Westminster students were inducted into Theta Alpha Kappa, the Religious Studies Honorary Society along with professors Maeba Jones and Dr. Jim McRae.

The three students are as following:

Sophomore Bobby Skitt ’18 (St. Louis, Missouri), a religious studies major.

Sophomore Sawyer Young ’18 (Fulton, Missouri), a history major with minors in chemistry and archaeology.

Junior Mahogany Thomas ’17 (Columbia, Missouri), a religious studies major with a self-designed major in queer theology.

“This honor gave me more pride and motivation in pursuing my major, my job, and possible future opportunities that come my way,” says Bobby.

Theta Alpha Kappa was established by Professor Albert Clark, F.S.C., at Manhattan College in Riverdale (the Bronx), for the purpose of recognizing the academic achievements of religion and theology students.  From these humble beginnings, the society has grown to more than 200 chapters nationally in four-year institutions that range from small religiously affiliated colleges to large public research institutions.

To be eligible for the society, a student must have a 3.5 grade point average in religious studies and/or theology and a 3.0 grade point average overall.

In addition to encouraging the activities of local chapters, Theta Alpha Kappa maintains a vigorous national program of scholarship awards and fellowship competitions.  Its primary publication, The Journal of Theta Alpha Kappa, offers an annual prize and the publication of outstanding student newspapers.
