Missouri Beta of Phi Delta Theta Receives National Chapter Excellence Award

During summer 2014, the Missouri Beta chapter of Phi Delta Theta sent Maulik Dave ’14 and Eric Strange ’13 to the fraternity’s 80th General Convention in Las Vegas, Nevada. Also attending were Chapter Adviser Tim Steinbeck ’82, Chapter Home Association President Bill Whitlow ’69, Provence President (Missouri Region) Josh Hanley ’02, and Past President of Phi Delta Theta International Art Hoge ’75.

While attending the convention, the chapter received six awards for the 2013 -2014 academic year. The highest award the Chapter received was the Chapter Excellence Award (Gold Star), given to only 20 select chapters of Phi Delta Theta nationwide who meet and exceed its requirements.

The following awards were also received by the Missouri Beta Chapter of Phi Delta Theta during this event:

  • The GHQ trophy (For Chapter administration),
  • Excellence in Scholarship Award,
  • Biggers Ritual Trophy,
  • Recruitment Improvement Award, and
  • The Stan Brown Trophy (Single Day Community Service Project).

The attainment of these awards would not have been possible without the excellent work of the chapters’ members and the faculty of Westminster College who keep them motivated to excel inside the classroom and outside every day.

Furthermore the members of the Missouri Beta chapter of Phi Delta Theta in the coming years hope to obtain the Kansas City Trophy, an award given to only one chapter of Phi Delta Theta nationwide at a small size college, and with the help of Westminster’s excellent faculty we hope that day will come soon. This year we qualified for the Kansas City Trophy, but our chapter size was too small for even for the small chapter level. Our recent recruitment efforts should solve that problem.

Also at the convention, Brother Art Hoge ’75, Past President of the Fraternity and Past President of the Westminster Alumni Association, was awarded the Alumnus of the Year. Art is an attorney in Oklahoma and has been very active in the Oklahoma City Community and in Phi Delta Theta, both locally and nationally. Brother Hoge and Bill Doran ’78 were instrumental in founding what is now the Klieberg Institute (Leadership College) which is held every summer at Miami University, Oxford Ohio, to train undergraduate members of Phi Delta Theta in leadership of their chapters.

Submitted by Maulik Dave ’14, Awards Chairman.
