A national academic honor society that represents the top 10 percent of college and graduate students, Alpha Chi recently named the Missouri Delta Chapter at Westminster College one of the top chapters in the nation. Only 48 chapters earned the Star Chapter designation for the 2014-2015 school year.

This marks the 14th year Missouri Delta at Westminster has received this honor.

Being a Star Chapter means that chapter members are active in the activities of the society,” says Dr. David Jones, Associate Dean of Faculty, Professor of Psychology and Alpha Chi advisor. “We are especially proud of the students in the chapter who worked so hard last year to prepare papers for presentation at the National Convention in Chicago, and especially of Suravi Shrestha, who won one of the the twelve national Sledge/Benedict Fellowships last year.”

Westminster College Alpha Chi member Suravi Shrestha won one of 12 Sledge/Benedict Fellowships in the nation.

Alpha Chi has 300 chapters located in almost every state, as well as Puerto Rico, and inducts more than 13,000 students every year.

Star Chapters are selected for their scholarly activities and their member recruitment. The award honors chapters that have met several criteria: inducting members locally, sending at least one faculty member and one student to the annual convention, having at least one student presentation on the convention program, nominating at least one student for a national Alpha Chi fellowship or scholarship and sponsoring at least one on-campus program in promotion of scholarship.

Founded in 1975, the Missouri Delta Chapter of Alpha Chi inducts only the top 10 percent of the senior class and the top 5 percent of the junior class.

The objectives of this highly selective academic honorary society, established nationally in 1922, are the stimulation, development, and recognition of scholarship and those elements of character that make scholarship effective. Alpha Chi actively promotes academic excellence, undergraduate and graduate research, campus academic dialogue and civic engagement.
