Student Campus Leaders Receive Free Leadership Training  

Westminster student leaders will receive all the tools and information they need to be successful in a special free Leadership Transition Workshop being held 11:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 20, in the Coulter Science Lecture Hall. 

This event is mandatory in order to remain a recognized group on campus, and all campus club, fraternity, and sorority presidents plus at least one other executive member must attend. 

Lunch is provided, and no advance registration is necessary. 

“We want to make sure students are fully prepared to take on their new leadership positions and are aware of what resources are available to them on campus so they can have successful events in the upcoming year,” says Nicole Elliott, Director of Campus Life.  

Elliott will be in charge of the day’s activities with the help of Liz Weise, new Assistant Director of Campus Life. Campus Life and the Campus Activities Board are co-hosting the event. 

Keynote speaker for the day is Dr. Joseph A. Brown, who will speak on how Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.‘s life experiences are relevant to Westminster students. The title of his lecture is “Wade in the Water, Children—Embracing the Legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.” 

Dr. Brown, a Catholic priest with an extensive academic and pastoral career, is a professor in the Department of Africana Studies at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, Illinois.   

Previously, Dr. Brown taught at the University of Virginia and Xavier University in New Orleans, Louisiana, after receiving a master’s degree in Afro-American studies and a doctorate in American studies from Yale University. He also holds a master’s degree in creative writing from Johns Hopkins University and a bachelor’s degree from St. Louis University.

After his ordination to the priesthood in 1972, Dr. Brown taught theatre and poetry at Creighton University for several years. In 1978 he became artist-in-residence.

Other presentations for the day will include club and organization registration practices and use of the event calendar, how to request funds and line item budgets, catering resources from Fresh Ideas, marketing avenues and resources, requests to IT and Plant Operations, and event registration and risk management.
