Softball Falls To Illinois College

The Westminster softball team dropped two games to Illinois College on Tuesday, 7-6 and 5-2. The Westminster Blue Jays are now 7-9 on the season.

Westminster scored three runs in the second inning to take the 3-1 lead. Freshman Alyssa Johnson and senior Brittany Lee singled, bringing bases loaded with freshman Anne Baker on third, Johnson on second and Lee on first. Freshman Madison McKindley then reached on a fielder’s choice, taking Lee out at second but moving Johnson to third and scoring Baker. Freshman Charlotte King then singled, scoring Johnson. Freshman Bri Peterson then grounded out to second, but earned the RBI when McKindley scored.

The Blue Jays added two more runs in the fourth and one run in the fifth. Johnson tripled and Lee singled, scoring Johnson. Lee was brought around the bases and scored on Peterson’s RBI single. In the fifth, freshman Allison Biggs doubled and was brought in on Baker’s RBI.

Illinois College scored one run in the fourth and four runs in the bottom of the fifth to tie up the game at 6. In the bottom of the seventh, Illinois College led-off with a double. She advanced to third with a single and scored on an error, ending the game with a Blue Jays 7-6 loss.

The Blue Jays finished with 11 hits. Lee went 3-3 from the plate, scoring once and earning one RBI.

Lee (6-5) was credited with the game loss. She pitched the complete game, faced 35 batters and struck out three.

Illinois College racked up a 5-0 lead by the sixth inning, while the Blue Jays managed just three hits. In the top of the seventh it was do or die for the Blue Jays, and they got their bats going. Lee singled and was advanced to second when McKindley was walked. Freshman Liz Carthen hit a RBI single, scoring Lee and moving McKindley to second. Peterson then singled, moving McKindley to third and Carthen to second. Senior Becca Rose reached on an error, and McKindley scored on the play. Illinois College then switched pitchers, and the Blue Jays quickly had two outs to end the game with the 5-2 loss.

Freshman Alyson Hahn (1-4) was credited with the loss. She faced 26 batters and struck out seven. The Blue Jays finished with six hits. Lee went 2-2 from the plate.

Westminster will travel to St. Louis, Missouri for a doubleheader with Washington University-St. Louis on Thursday, April 3. Game one begins at 4:00 p.m.
