Lee Breaks Two Career Records, Ties Third
Senior Brittany Lee is continuing her record breaking season with two more career records broken and one tied during Westminster’s 2-2 weekend. The Westminster Blue Jays swept Eureka 5-1 and 6-4 on Saturday, April 5. On Sunday, the Blue Jays hosted Spalding and dropped both games. They were short-gamed in the sixth inning of game one, 12-2, and fell in game two, 5-2. The Blue Jays are now 9-11 overall and 6-4 in conference play.
Lee tied the all-time sacrifice record in game one versus Eureka, earning her sixth sacrifice of the season and bring her career total to 14. She went on to break the all-time save record in the second game versus Eureka, earning her third career save. In the second game versus Spalding, she broke the all-time innings pitched record. She has now pitched 384 innings in her collegiate career.
The Blue Jays went down 1-0 after the first inning of game one at Eureka College on Saturday. Their bats lit up in the second inning as they grabbed four hits and five runs. Lee hit a sacrifice bunt to advance freshman Alyssa Johnson, but reached on a fielder’s choice. Freshman Bri Peterson brought in Johnson with a RBI single, and senior Becca Rose hit a 2 RBI double to score Lee and Peterson. Freshman Allison Biggs hit her first collegiate career homerun, scoring herself and Rose.
The next five innings were scoreless, giving the Blue Jays the 5-1 conference win. Lee (7-5) pitched the complete game and struck out seven. Biggs went 3-4 from the plate, scoring once and grabbing two RBI. Rose went 2-3 from the plate with two RBI and one run. Senior Rai’an Harris finished with 11 putouts and Johnson finished with seven.
The Blue Jays led-off game two with three runs. Rose led-off with a walk. She advanced to second on a fielding error and to third on a wild pitch. Harris stepped up and hit a 2 RBI single to score Rose and Biggs. Freshman Anne Baker was hit by a pitch and later scored on a fielding error.
Eureka scored a run in the bottom of the first to bring the score to 3-1.
In the top of the second, Eureka walked in a Blue Jay run. In the third, Rose hit a RBI double to left center to score freshman Liz Carthen. In the fourth, Harris singled and moved to second on Baker’s ground out. She moved to third on Johnson’s ground out and scored on Lee’s RBI single. The Blue Jays held a 6-1 lead heading into the fifth inning.
Eureka scored two runs in the fifth and another in the bottom of the seventh, but the Blue Jays stayed strong in the field and brought home the two game sweep over Eureka with a 6-4 game two win.
Freshman Alyson Hahn (2-4) was credited with the win after pitching five innings and striking out five. Lee was credited with the save after pitching two innings, breaking the all-time save record. Harris went 2-3 from the plate, scoring once and grabbing three RBI. Johnson finished the game with eight putouts.
On Sunday, Spalding opened up game one with two homeruns to take a 4-0 lead. The Blue Jays scored one in the bottom of the first as Peterson scored on Harris’ RBI single. Spalding put up three more runs in the second, taking the 7-1 lead.
The Blue Jays scored another run in the bottom of the fifth, but Spalding answered back with five more runs in the top of the sixth. The Blue Jays were unable to score in the sixth, ending the game with a 12-2 loss in six.
Lee (7-6) was credited with the loss. She pitched five innings.
Peterson led-off for the Blue Jays in game two with a single. She advanced to second on Rose’s ground out to shortstop and scored on Biggs’ RBI double.
Spalding scored a run in the second, third and fifth inning, taking a 3-1 lead. Baker started it off for the Blue Jays in the fifth with a single. She advanced to second on freshman Charlotte King’s ground out to the pitcher and scored on Peterson’s RBI double.
Spalding added two more security runs in the sixth inning. The Blue Jays were able to score again, ending game two with a 5-2 loss.
Lee (7-7) pitched the complete game and struck out eight. She broke the all-time innings pitched record after the third inning. Peterson went 2-4 from the plate, scoring once and grabbing one RBI. Johnson finished the game with seven putouts.
The Blue Jays will host Fontbonne University on Wednesday, April 9 at 5:00 and 7:00 p.m. The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee is hosting a trivia and giveaway day at the games in celebration of Division III Week.
