Take-a-Friend-Home: Enrique and Olivia’s Guatemala Story

This past summer, Westminster students Olivia Andoe ’17 and Enrique Salanic Alvarado ’15 participated in Westminster’s Take-a-Friend-Home program, an innovative global outreach and cultural immersion program through the College’s Churchill Institute for Global Engagement. Supported by Westminster’s Board of Trustees, the program funds round-trip airfare for pairs of students to experience each other’s home country, a great opportunity for cultural exchange and education.

As part of their application for the program, Olivia and Enrique planned a volunteer project in Enrique’s home country, Guatemala. They went through a rigorous application process and were approved to volunteer at the Animal Aware Shelter, the largest animal shelter in the area. Also as a part of the Take-a-Friend-Home program, Enrique will visit with Olivia’s family in Tulsa, Oklahoma over Thanksgiving break.

Applications for the Take-a-Friend-Home Program are available during International Education Week in November of each year. Completed applications are due approximately one week after the start of the spring semester in January.
