Physician Dr. Carl Luem to Receive Alumni Achievement Award
Dr. Carl Luem from Las Vegas, NV, Class of 1964 and a member of Sigma Chi fraternity, will receive a Westminster College Alumni Achievement Award on Saturday, April 13, during the College’s Alumni Weekend.
Dr. Luem has dedicated his life to the medical profession and spent the last 44 years caring for patients, delivering hundreds of babies and providing outstanding medical and surgical care for many women.
As a physician, he has spent a great deal of his time and expertise serving the medical needs of patients in low-income areas of Los Angeles and Mexico. He has volunteered his services to people in the Philippines and on Native American reservations in the Dakotas.
He currently offers his medical services to low-income and uninsured patients at Centennial Hills Hospital in Las Vegas.
Son Nick Luem who nominated Dr. Luem says: “I have always been inspired by his work ethic and dedication. His values were an inspiration to me as I followed his lead into the medical profession.”
Dr. Luem began his private OB/GYN medical practice in 1974 with a private practice in Orange County, CA. He spent the next 44 years caring for patients, delivering babies, and providing outstanding medical and surgical care for women in not only several clinics in California, but Toccoa, GA, Jerome, ID, and Fairfax, MO.
In 1968 Dr. Luem completed his medical degree at the University of Missouri and spent the next two years as a Captain in the Medical Corps of the U.S. Army. He spent one of those years deployed in Vietnam, caring for soldiers and civilians in dangerous and difficult circumstances before returning to St. Louis to complete his residency training.
The Alumni Achievement Award is presented annually to alumni whose accomplishments reflect the Westminster mission and have distinguished themselves through personal achievements, professional achievements and/or have made significant contributions to society.
Dr. Luem will receive his award at a special Alumni Honors Convocation Ceremony to be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 13, in the Church of St. Mary the Virgin, Aldermanbury. The award is approved by both the Alumni Council and the Board of Trustees. Up to six alumni can receive the award annually.
