New Student Service Day A Success
Nearly 300 Westminster students – new freshmen plus their mentors – took to the streets of Fulton Wednesday to complete service projects at eight local organizations:
Presbyterian Manor (senior living community)
CARDV (local domestic violence awareness and victim support organization)
Our House (Callaway County homeless shelter)
Christian Women’s Counseling Center
Churchill Terrace (senior living community)
Head Start (part of Central Missouri Community Action)
“Within the first couple of days of being on campus, we want to send a clear message to our new students that they are part of a broader community and what their responsibilities are as good citizens,” said Bob Hansen, Executive Director of Westminster’s Center for Leadership and Service. “We want them to learn about the local community and know our expectations of service while they are here, and we want the community to know we are committed to supporting those around us.”
Rachel Holloway, ’13, is serving as the Westminster Fellow for Community Engagement and Service Learning. “I am so grateful to our community partners for allowing our students to help out and sharing a warm welcome into the Fulton community,” said Holloway, who coordinated the Day of Service. “The students came back glowing about their experiences! They displayed amazing work ethic and positive attitudes throughout the day, I couldn’t ask for a better turn out!”
