New Students Do Community Service Work

New students at Westminster College learned early during their orientation week what an important part of the Westminster educational experience community service is as they moved around the city of Fulton making improvements took take part in New Student Service Day.

All the tools and supplies necessary to complete the day’s work were ready for the students when they arrived at the Hunter Activity Center. Kari Lenz, this year’s Community Engagement & Service-Learning Fellow from the Emerson Center for Leadership & Service, was in charge of organizing the day and keeping the activities running smoothly.

New students worked in the morning from 9 a.m.-11:30 a.m. and then again in the afternoon from 1 p.m.-3:30 p.m.

Their activities included cupboard cleaning and washing and cleaning buses at SERVE; cleaning up trees and bushes and dismantling a flower bed at Presbyterian Manor; weeding and assembling greenhouses at Westminster’s Community Garden; cleaning and sorting closets at Churchill Terrace; yard work and cleaning at CARDV; and projects at Our House and the Brick District downtown.

“Since the founding of Westminster in 1851, our mission has been to prepare students ‘for useful service to the community,’” says Westminster President Dr. George B. Forsythe. “Being prepared as a leader to make a difference in the world is the hallmark of a Westminster education so we want our new students to realize the importance of service in their educational journey here from the very beginning.”
