Dr. Ed Mirielli Receives Buschman-President’s Award for Excellence in Teaching

Dr. Ed Mirielli, Professor of Computer Science, is the 2015 recipient of Westminster’s highest award for teaching, the Buschman-President’s Award.  Dr. Mirielli, who has been teaching at Westminster since 1998, has earned an outstanding reputation as an educator in the fields of Computer Science and Information Technology.  In keeping with his solid liberal arts background (Dr. Mirielli holds degrees in psychology and sociology, in addition to his training in computer science), he is known for his liberal-arts approach to computing, his interdisciplinary courses, and his emphasis on teaching students to apply knowledge to solve complex problems.

In 2013, Dr. Mirielli won the Bill Tyler Award for internationalizing the computer science curriculum through design thinking with the Da Vinci Institute of South Africa.  At the same time, he has been awarded numerous Campus Compact grants for his service-learning courses, and these courses have provided vital services to the Fulton community. Working with his colleague Dr. Linda Webster, Dr. Mirielli designed the annual “Projects Showcase,” which brings together professionals from around the state to inspire, evaluate, and join with our Computer Science students in a celebration of their work.

In addition to teaching a wide range of courses and keeping computer labs in Coulter in top condition, Dr. Mirielli is known for his amazing “sauce-ology” skills, as an expert in developing barbeque sauce for Trail Boss BBQ.
