Meet Sophomore Caleb Maassen: Student Photographer and Podcaster
Where are you from?
I am from Linn, Missouri, a small town about 20 minutes from Jefferson City.
What year are you at Westminster, and what is your major?
I am a sophomore, and I am studying Digital Media.
What are you involved with at Westminster?
I play basketball with the Blue Jays men’s basketball team, I work in the Sports Information Office, and I am the photographer for the Blue Jays athletic teams. I also recently began a position as a co-host on a podcast run by the Department of Athletics called “Blue Jay Talk,” where we interview different coaches and athletes from teams here on campus.
What are your plans after graduation?
After graduation, I want to work for a college or professional team and provide content, like photography or videography, for them. I’d also like to continue building the business I started, Caleb Maassen Media, or CMM.
Can you explain what you’ve been doing with the Department of Athletics?
Since my freshman year, I have been working for Athletics as a photographer for our teams. Specifically, I capture sports photographs for most of our home events, take team pictures, and do media-days sets. Out of all the tasks I perform, I find creating media-day sets and providing pictures for the athletes to be my favorite. It is satisfying to offer these athletes high-quality images that they might not otherwise have access to, so they can post on social media or share with their families.
What other activities are you involved with on campus?
Dr. Majerus approached me and asked if I could help create a podcast for the Center for Teaching and Learning. So far, we have been planning it out and finding candidates, but when it’s all said and done, I hope to provide a professional-looking and sounding podcast that anyone can view.
What is your favorite part of going to Westminster?
I love the campus here and the classes. The class sizes are small, and it is easy to communicate with the professors.
