Meet Kari Lenz, Community Engagement & Service Learning Fellow
The Emerson Center for Community Engagement and Service-Learning Program provides a powerful way to make classroom and out-of-classroom learning applicable to the real world. The center hopes to help students “connect the dots” by applying their academic studies to needs in the community while learning more about themselves, their studies, and the world they live in. This year, Westminster students aim to complete 10,000 hours of service. As the 2014-15 Westminster Fellow for Community Engagement and Service Learning, Kari Lenz ’14 is here to help with guidance and connections to community partners in Fulton.
Kari’s personal initiatives while serving as the Community Engagement and Service Learning Fellow is to bridge the gap between Westminster and the Fulton community and provide fun opportunities for students to serve. At Westminster’s Block Party earlier this semester, Kari organized an opportunity for students to plant and decorate flower plants to be donated to the local senior center. She is looking forward to Westminster’s annual Into the Streets service event. Each year, Fulton provides a list of needs in the community and Westminster students rise to the occasion by giving their time and aid to those who need it.
As a fellow, Kari says she has already utilized all her degrees. She graduated with degrees in History, Political Science, and Secondary Social Science Education. “I can put what I learned at Westminster into a context of non-profit work that I can be passionate about. I know with this experience I can find my career and create my own path.”
Into the Streets 2014 will be Saturday, October 18 from 12 pm to 2 pm. For more information about this event, email Kari at [email protected]. Find more information about the Emerson Center for Leadership and Service on our webpage.
Kari Lenz is one of three 2014 Westminster graduates hired this year to be the 2014-15 Westminster Fellows. Each fellowship position is designed to fill a need on campus.
