Many Summer Options for High School Students

Registration is now open for a wide range of options that allow area high school students to jump start their college credit this summer at Westminster College.

A fast paced intensive course that combines in-class and online activities will allow high schools students to earn three college credits in three weeks.  This June term runs from June 6-24 and students have a choice of classes on Mondays and Wednesdays from 5:30 p.m.-9 p.m. or Tuesdays and Thursdays during the same time periods.

Course work is available in the departments of Astronomy, Education, English, Humanities, International/Transnational Studies,  Leadership Studies, Psychology and Women/Gender Studies.  Interested students can refer to the link below for complete course titles and credit hours.

Students at participating high schools may be eligible for a reduced tuition rate if their high school has a dual-enrollment agreement with Westminster.

Or students can earn the three credits online with course work beginning June 6 and ending June 24.  Course work is available in the departments of Business, Chemistry, Economics, Education, Geography, History, Humanities, Music, Philosophy and Political Science.  Interested students can refer to the link below for complete course titles and credit hours.

Registration for the three credits in three weeks or the three credits online must be completed by the end of business day on Friday, June 3.

A third possibility is a six week online  class which starts May 31 and ends July 12.  Classes are available in the departments of Accounting, Business, Economics, Education,  English, Health/Exercise Science, Mathematics, Political Science, Psychology, Religion, Security Studies, Sociology, Speech, Transnational Studies and Women/Gender Studies.  Interested students can refer to the link below for complete course titles and credit hours.

Students must complete registration for this option by the end of business day Friday, May 27.

In addition, high school students can enjoy two different one-week experiences living on campus and learning about national security or science, technology, engineering and mathematics and earn one hour of college credit from the experience.

The Westminster Institute for National Security runs July 17-21 for high school students who will be entering their sophomore year this fall through seniors graduating with the class of 2016.

During the week analysis, discussion and debate will be coupled with hands-on problem solving, role playing and games led by a national security expert, Dr. Tobias Gibson, who can be reached at 573-592-5185.  Course work will include the causes and consequences of 9/11, balancing post war justice and reconciliation, global climate change and biological crisis and security.

The STEM Academy will run July 10-14 for high school students entering their sophomore year this fall through those seniors graduating in 2016.  Deadline to register is July 1.

During Academy week, students will receive lab work and field experience from real world professions in STEM, working to solve problems through project-based learning and fun and creative activities.  Course work will be announced soon but past academies have studied DNA, built rockets and explored paleontology among other subjects.
