Lady Blue Jays Dominate In First Half, Defeat Principia 58-37

The Westminster Lady Blue Jays outscored the Principia College Panthers in the first half Thursday evening, 32-13. The Blue Jays went on to win 58-37, improving their overall record to 8-8 and their St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) record to 6-4.

The Blue Jays took an 8-0 lead just 1:35 in the game, but Panthers managed to bring the game within 3 after seven minutes of play, 14-11. The Blue Jays spent the rest of the first half on an 18-2 run. The Panthers scored their two points off free throws in the final minute.

“We had a really good defensive output in the first half. Offensively, we need to continue to work on a balanced attack,” stated Head Coach Tracey Braden.

The Blue Jays held their lead in the second half, and managed to grab a 10-2 run with 8:51 left in the game (49-21). The Blue Jays closed out the game with a 21 point win, 58-37.

“We moved the ball well. It was a nice team win for us,” commented sophomore Mackenzie Haddox. Haddox finished the night with 8 points and 5 rebounds.

Senior Leigh Ann Lutz led the Blue Jays with 11 points, followed by freshman Andrea Zalis with 10 points. Zalis and sophomore Jen Herndon grabbed 7 rebounds each.

The Blue Jays travel to Eureka, Illinois this Saturday, January 25, to play Eureka College. Tip-off is at 1:00 p.m.
