International Week at Westminster: November 8-15

With 78 different countries represented on its campus, every year international students at Westminster College celebrate International Week with shows and showcases to give other Westminster students and the people of Central Missouri a glimpse and sometimes a taste of the richness found in their cultures.

International Week 2013 Kicks Off With the International Show

This year’s celebration launches at 7 p.m., Friday, Nov. 8, in Champ Auditorium with an exciting and entertaining International Show where both the campus and the general public can view the singing and dancing talents of Westminster international students.

Dances from Cambodia, Africa, Nepal, Ethiopia and the Philippines will be offered as well as such traditional dances as the Brazilian samba, Cuban salsa, and Chinese Folding Fan Dance.  Songs such as “Solo le pido a Dios” (Only I ask of God) and “Hosik’I Gasikara” (Let’s go Madagascar) will be sung.

As is the custom, an international fashion show will take place in the middle of the evening’s entertainment, highlighting the beautiful and colorful native clothes of the international students. Some of the countries represented include China, India, Botswana, Togo, Madagascar, Gambia, Paraguay, the Philippines, Belgium, Afghanistan and Nepal.

Other International Week Events

November 9 at 1:00pm: Intramural Games to Raise Money for Syrian Refugees

On Saturday, November 9, international students at Westminster will play intramural games at 1 p.m. in the Hunter Activity Center Gym to raise money for Syrian refugees. Also, throughout the week, there will be booths set up during events to fundraise for the Syrian refugees as well.

November 11 at 6:30pm: International Cookout

Then an international cookout will take place Monday, November11, at 6:30 p.m. in the Johnson College Inn (JCI).  Doro Wot from Ethiopia, Tufahije and Sis Cevap from Bosnia and Herzegovina, oil sprinkled noodles and sweet and spare ribs from China, meat curry from the Maldives, Chana Masala and Alu Tareko from Nepal and Pastel de Tres Leches from Costa Rica are names of dishes that will be served.

November 12 at 7:00pm: Presentation by African Students

Westminster students from Africa will talk about their countries and region, their cultures, and the issues that confront their people in a special presentation at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, November 12, in the Hermann Lounge.

November 13 from 4:30-6:30 pm: International Booth Displays in JCI

From 4:30 p.m.-6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, November 13, representatives from a number of different countries will sit in booths in the JCI to talk to people about their countries and display traditional items from their homelands.

November 14 at 7:00pm: “Sex and Money” Human Trafficking Documentary Showing

The Thursday, Nov. 14 event will be a showing of the documentary “Sex and Money” at 7 p.m. in the Lecture Hall of the Coulter Science Center.  This feature-length documentary follows a group of photojournalists as they travel in an RV across the United States, seeking to understand how the sexual exploitation of children has become our nation’s fastest growing form of organized crime and tells what can be done to stop it.

November 15 at 4:00pm: “Italian Villa”-themed Campus Celebration

Finally, on Friday, Nov. 15, the entire Westminster community of faculty, staff, and students will come together at 4 p.m. in the Mueller Student Center for a celebration of refreshments and music with an Italian theme at the “Italian Villa” event organized by the Campus Activities Board (CAB).
