Hughes and Branneky Named to 2014 ABCA/Rawlings NCAA DIII Central Region Team
Two Westminster baseball players were named to the 2014 American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA)/Rawlings NCAA Division III Central Region Teams. Sophomore Deion Hughes was selected to the First Team as a utility player and junior Tyler Branneky was named to the Second Team for third base.
Hughes was a threat on the mound and from the batter’s box throughout the season. He led the nation for two consecutive weeks for strikeouts per nine innings and is currently sitting in third with a 12.77 average. Hughes broke the Westminster season record with a total of eight wins on the season. He completed the season with a 1.94 ERA in 55.2 innings on the mound. He struck out 79 throughout the season. From the plate, Hughes hit a .361. He led the team with 48 hits and four triples, and he scored 29 runs. He also ranked second on the team with 26 RBI.
Hughes was also named to the 2014 D3Baseball.com All-Central Region Second Team and the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) All-Conference First Team.
Branneky led the team with a .366 batting average and a .577 slugging percentage. He finished the season with eight doubles, three triples and four homeruns with 31 runs scored and 23 RBI. On the defensive end, he had 67 assists and a .900 fielding percentage.
Branneky was also named to the 2014 SLIAC All-Conference First Team.
The Westminster baseball team finished the season with a 21-14 record and a 15-12 conference record.
