High Schoolers Encouraged to Enroll Now in Westminster Summer Science Camps

Do you know a high school student who is interested in science and math or who isn’t sure how skills in those disciplines will lead to a future career? Let Westminster College show the way. The College is now accepting applications for two exciting summer camps for high school students: STEM Camp and WestMO Bug Camp. Both camps will take place from June 17 to June 21 on campus.

Incoming high school freshmen through those who will be seniors during the 2019-2020 Academic Year are encouraged to apply. Both camps cost $575 each, which includes dormitory fees, all meals, transportation to and from field sites, and educational materials.

STEM Camp

Students will stay in Westminster dormitories and make regular field trips to Prairie Fork Conservation Area in Williamsburg, Missouri, to explore and learn how the natural sciences, mathematical sciences, and liberal arts intersect. For more information or to apply, go here

WestMO Bug Camp

Students will stay in Westminster dormitories and make regular field trips to the Prairie Garden Trust near New Bloomfield, Missouri, to explore the fascinating world of insects. Registration is limited to 12 students. For more information or to apply, go here.

Why Enroll?

Both camps give students the opportunity to have fun, meet new people, spend a week outside, and learn new and fascinating details about the natural world around us.

Dr. Gabe McNett, Associate Professor of Biology, says the camps are beneficial to high schoolers for a number of reasons.

“As a college professor (and one who has served on Admissions Committees), I know this sort of experience just looks good on a college application, regardless of your future interests,” he explains. “Enrolling in camps such as these shows you have broad interests, a spirit of adventure, and a desire to learn something new.”

McNett adds that students who plan to attend Westminster after graduation will be able to apply knowledge from camp toward a Westminster degree. “Students will be able to develop ideas acquired at the camp for future independent research projects,” he says.
