High School Students Invited to Explore National and Global Security Issues During Five-Day Seminar
A five-day seminar for high school students interested in learning about national and international security will be held next month at the Westminster Institute for National Security Institute (WINS) on the campus of Westminster College, it was announced today.
“High school students who attend WINS will explore, confront and challenge global security issues facing our nation and world today,” said Westminster President Dr. Benjamin Ola. Akande. “The expert perspectives and knowledge these students will receive and the depth of discussion and analysis in the seminars is excellent preparation for college and a possible career in security studies.”
WINS will be held July 17-21, and is open to all incoming high school sophomores, juniors and seniors. A $500 fee will be charged to cover housing, food, activities, and the classes.
Speakers for this WINS session, now in its second year, include U.S. Congressman Blaine Luetkemeyer, MO-3rd District, who serves on the House Financial Services Committee and House Small Business Committee. He also is Chairman of the Subcommittee on Housing and Insurance.
In addition to Luetkemeyer, speakers will include Westminster College faculty members Dr. Mark Boulton, Associate Professor of History; Dr. Kali Wright-Smith, Assistant Professor of Political Science; Dr. Irene Unger, Associate Professor of Biology and Environmental Science; and, Jeff Mayne, Chair, Department of Biology and Environmental Studies.
They will discuss such important national issues as the causes and consequences of 9/11, how societies deal with the aftermath of war, the impact of climate change, and the threat of biological crises – all as they impact national and global security.
“Westminster College has developed WINS in an effort to teach and train high school students who are interested in homeland, national and international security issues,” said Dr. Tobias Gibson, a recognized national and homeland science expert at Westminster College. “Helping students build historical, political, ethical and cultural context within the security nexus is a key role of this Institute.”
Importantly, students who complete WINS can earn one hour of college credit in security studies. They also may be eligible to receive a $1,000 renewable yearly scholarship to attend Westminster College.
