Four Faculty Members Approved for Tenure
Dr. William J. Carner, Associate Professor of Business (2011)
Education: A.B. Business Administration and Economics; Drury University, M.B.A., Finance; Ph.D. Marketing; University of Missouri Columbia, MO. He also attended banking school at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Professional Accomplishments: Dr. Carner had many years of professional experience in both academic and business environments before coming to Westminster. He served as a Senior Lecturer in Marketing and as Director of the Business Foundations Program, at the University of Texas, Austin between 1992 and 2007. He also was a business entrepreneur and served as a manager of several companies. He wrote two chapter on marketing for Business Essentials, published by Prentice Hall, and has an industry marketing manual, Community Bank, published by Sheshunoff Information Services Inc., released in 2011. He also serves on the editorial review board for International Research Journal: Innovative Marketing. He has taught a number of courses for the ABE/MIS department, has been instrumental in the development of the application for ACBSP accreditation for the business major, and has aided in the development of the sports management major.
Dr. James P. Concannon, Assistant Professor of Education (2007)
Education: B.S. Biochemistry; M.Ed. Curriculum and Instruction; Ph.D. Learning, Teaching and Curriculum: Science Education; University of Missouri, Columbia, MO.
Professional Accomplishments: Dr. Concannon has been very active professionally since coming to Westminster in 2007. He was selected as Westminster Junior Faculty member of the year in Social Sciences and has presented at 11 professional conferences on a variety of topics related to science, learning and education. Some of these presentations have included students as co-presenters. Additionally, he has published 17 peer-reviewed articles in a variety of publications, individually, with other colleagues and with students. His article, “A Reanalysis of Engineering Majors Self Efficacy Beliefs,” was selected by AAAS (The American Association for the Advancement of Science) as the best science article of 2012. At this time, Jim has additional articles slated for publication, presented at a national conference in October, and has been accepted to present at the State DESE Science conference in the spring. Jim has passion for his subject, especially science education, and brings collegiality to the professional community.
Dr. Erin Haller Martin, Assistant Professor of Mathematical Sciences (2008)
Education: B.S. University of Missouri-Rolla; M.S. University of Arkansas-Fayetteville; Ph.D. University of Arkansas-Fayetteville.
Professional Accomplishments: Dr. Martin has made numerous conference presentations and has published two articles. She is highly passionate about undergraduate research, and, with her support and guidance, one of her research students had the opportunity to attend and present at a national meeting. Dr. Martin has served on a wide variety of college committees, including the Faculty Personnel Committee and the Westminster Experience Task Force. She acts as the Dual Degree Engineering coordinator and has revitalized and expanded the program by establishing a new partnership with the University of Missouri-Rolla. She has been the faculty advisor for Pi Mu Epsilon, the mathematics honor society and for the Science Inside Club. In 2010, Dr. Martin received the Outstanding Junior Faculty Award for the Natural and Mathematical Science Division. She teaches a variety of mathematics and pre-engineering courses.
Dr. Maureen Tuthill, Assistant Professor of English (2008)
Education: B.A. The College of William and Mary; M.A State University of New York at Stony Brook; Ph.D. University of Connecticut, Storrs.
Professional Accomplishments: Dr. Tuthill has written and presented numerous conference papers. She has also published three refereed journal publications, two book reviews, and her book manuscript, A Medical Examination of the Early American Novel: Fictions of Social Medicine in the New Nation, is currently under review and near publication. She has taught a variety of courses, including media studies; medical visions in literature; literature classes about the Great Depression and before and after the Civil War; journalism; the short story; expository writing; academic writing; and the Westminster Transfer Seminar. In addition, she is the faculty advisor for the campus newspaper, The Columns, faculty advisor for Sigma Tau Delta (the English honor society), and a chapter advisor for Alpha Chi. She has served on the Faculty Personnel Committee, chaired the Curriculum Committee, and directed the Writing Across the Curriculum program. Dr. Tuthill’s teaching achievements have resulted in her winning the Excellence in Teaching Award from the Westminster Education Association in 2012 and the Dean’s Outstanding Junior Faculty Award in the Humanities in 2011. She was also awarded a Westminster College Faculty Summer Research Stipend in 2013.
