“Your Story Matters” Theme of This Year’s Remley Women’s Conference

Stories and presentations about women’s achievements and true stories of survivors of sexual assault have been incorporated under the theme of “Your Story Matters” for this year’s Remley Women’s Conference, which will be held Thursday, April 6,  in the Mueller Student Center on the Westminster College campus.

The doors will open at 5 p.m. for dinner with the program following at 5:30 p.m.  The conference is free and a free t-shirt will be given to the first 40 attendees.

“What started as a very small conference with presentations on women’s and gender issues six years ago has grown into a true celebration of women’s history and contributions with artistic performances, fashion shows and panel discussions as well as numerous presentations,” says Dr. Cinnamon Brown, Associate Professor of History, who is one of the lead organizers of the conference in addition to Associate Dean of Student Life Dr. Kasi Lacey.

This year’s conference will include such program highlights as “The Good, the Bad and the Unknown of Women’s Health,” “How to be a Gentleman in a Feminist World,” “Girls at the Back of  the Bus,” “What We Learned When We Marched: A Panel on the Women’s March on Washington, D.C.,” “Music of Female Composers and Musicians in the Baroque Era” and “Ode to Feminist Theory: A Poetry Reading.”  Scenes from The Vagina Monologues will be performed and a video, compiled by Westminster students, that features the true stories of local survivors of sexual assault will be screened.

Held to celebrate Women’s History Month, the Remley Women’s Conference is sponsored by The Remley Woimen Advocate, a Westminster group who seeks to educate the campus on gender issues, with a particular emphasis on women, by providing space, programming and vital resources to all members of the college community. The group provides support services and information for members of the campus community affected by gender based equalities, intolerance and sexual assault and violence.
