Spring Break 2023: “Dark Tourism in the Crescent City: Voodoo, Vampires, and Visions of Death in New Orleans Museums.”
October 5, 2022 @ 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM
Join us next Wednesday, October 5 at noon in CSC 205 to learn about a new travel course for Spring Break 2023: “Dark Tourism in the Crescent City: Voodoo, Vampires, and Visions of Death in New Orleans Museums.”
*Lunch will be served*
Spend Spring Break in America’s most fascinating—and haunted—city, New Orleans, as we explore the dark side of the Crescent City.
Dark Tourism, or thanatourism, is a growing field of study which seeks to understand why people are drawn to places of historical tragedy. This new Museum Studies and History course explores how the New Orleans tourism industry capitalizes on its reputation for being a dangerous and seductive place. The class will explore the theory and practice of Dark Tourism before journeying south and visiting Voodoo museums, historic graveyards, haunted hotels, true crime scenes, and taking ghost tours. We will analyze the appeal of such places and use them to assess the boundaries between reverence and exploitation in commemorating locations of tragedy and horror.
You will also get to experience the city’s incredible history, vibrant culture, and delicious food.
This course is open to all Westminster students and friends of the college, but space is limited due to the number of seats on the vans.
Join us at the meeting or contact Dr. Mark Boulton, Chair of the History Department, at [email protected] if you are interested.
The course will begin at the start of the Spring semester 2023 and will end after the trip to New Orleans over Spring Break.
