Westminster College: News and Notes from the nest

Confidentially speaking: Museum Confidential podcast host and Westminster alum features ANCM

A few years ago, I stumbled across a New York Times story that mentioned a Westminster classmate of mine from the days of yore.

“Scott Gregory,” known by early ’90s Blue Jays as Scotty Pitcock, was an English major from the Class of 1993 with a wicked creative streak. Now an operations director who also handles programming for two stations comprising Public Radio Tulsa, Scotty hosts the popular All This Jazz show as well as multiple podcasts. One particular project ― the Philbrook Museum of Art’s Museum Confidential podcast ― was gaining traction from Tulsa to Tokyo in our “wherever you get your podcasts” digital world. And thus the New York Times took notice and wrote the April 2022 feature that caught my eye, “Using Podcasts to Broaden the Reach of Smaller Museums.”

A sstatue of Winston Churchill located outside of ANCM is placed above the Museum Confidential logo text treatment in red over a black rectangular background.

So when Westminster’s Department of Institutional Marketing and Strategic Communications began working on a comprehensive ad campaign for America’s National Churchill Museum, I did what any self-respecting Westminster employee would do. I groveled via unanswered email and then desperate text message.

“PLEASE feature our Museum on your new cool podcast,” I slobbered (or something like that).

Fast forward from January to May, and here it is (or listen below)!

I tip my hat in genuine gratitude, like Winston Churchill during his post-“Iron Curtain” speech campus luncheon, when he declared, “I believe the pig has reached its highest state of evolution in the form of this ham!”

Thanks, Scotty.

A comprehensive campaign

Peruse ANCM’s brand-spanking new marketing campaign aimed at a younger audience, complete with Churchillian kitsch, a riveting and rollicking History Mystery and one very cool commercial (below) that aired on ABC17 News and on digital platforms everywhere. Find out why the Museum truly is a Legacy That Lasts. Oh! And while you’re there, learn all about ANCM’s loveable new mascot, Victor the British Bulldog.

Celebrate good times:
80th anniversary celebration of VE Day

Catch a glimpse of ANCM’s 80th anniversary celebration of VE Day, when the bells of St. Mary’s joyously pealed, confusing passersby as international news simultaneously erupted about the announcement of the new pope. Meanwhile, local news reporters from KRCG TV13 interviewed Timothy Riley and members of the Greatest Generation, including Dr. David Jones’ mother, Brenda Jones, who was a young girl in London when the war ended on May 8, 1945. KOMU 8 and the Fulton Sun also ran stories on the celebration.

Check out an interview with Robbie Pratte, ANCM’s new Director of Operations, by visiting Westminster’s Facebook page. A few of us also interviewed Victor, the British Bulldog mascot who made his fashionable debut during the event. He told me to tell you he likes snacks and naps and pats on the head. You’re going to want to SQUEEZE him, just like I did. Meanwhile, watch for a follow-up story on a local legend who the Museum and friends gifted a special basket in recognition of his bravery during World War II.
