Students and Instructors from Four States Come to Westminster for Computer Science Consortium

College professors and students as well as K-12 teachers are invited to attend  the 20th annual Central Plains Consortium for Computing Sciences in Colleges April 4-5 at Westminster College.

This yearly regional meeting enables  participants from  Missouri, Iowa, Kansas and Nebraska to gather to learn, network and renew their energy about teaching and  new developments in the computing discipline.

Presenters will be from colleges and universities across the United States, covering topics that range from “Essentials of Software Engineering:  What To Teach When You Can’t Teach Everything” to “On-Video Based Instruction for Introductory Computer Programming.”

An opening keynote address will be given on “IBM-Emerging Technologies for a Smarter Planet” by Michael S. Robison, Manager-Distributed Database Management for IBM Global Technology Services in Columbia, MO.

The evening banquet speech on “Creative Uses of Technology to Market Ideas, Solve Business Programs, and Win a Few Awards in the Process” will be delivered by Rich Schmick, Director of Organizational Development for VML Full Service Digital Marketing & Advertising Agency in Kansas City, MO.

The conference was planned under the leadership of Regional Chairman Dr. Edward Mirielli, Chair of the Westminster Computer Science Department.

Thanks to the generosity of the Cerner Corporation, a limited number of K-12 teachers will receive free registration on a first-come, first-served basis.  The opening keynote address will begin at 1 p.m. on Friday, April 4.

The Consortium for Computing Sciences in Colleges is a non-profit organization focused on promoting quality computer-oriented curricula as well as effective use of computing in smaller institutions of higher learning.  The organization supports activities which assist faculty in making appropriate judgments concerning computing resources and educational applications of computer technology.  The Consortium also encourages the sharing of expertise, effective curricula and efficient technological applications.
