Claire Vatterott ’10: From Westminster to Dream Job

Claire Vatterott, Class of 2010, graduated this spring with her Master’s in Special Education – Learning Disabilities from University of Missouri – St. Louis. Above, Claire with one of her favorite students. Below, Claire shares her Westminster story.

I graduated from Westminster in 2010 with my degree in Elementary Education. Two weeks after graduation, I started my graduate program at the University of Missouri-St.Louis, and I landed my first job as an associate teacher at Andrews Academy in Lake St. Louis. It was a whirlwind!

I finished up my masters in Special Education – Learning Disabilities from UMSL. I was promoted to Academic Enrichment Specialist at Andrews Academy. It’s been my dream position since I was 13!

I work closely with classroom teachers to individualize the curriculum for our students who have special learning needs. I work with the students one-on-one and in small groups to make sure their needs are being met and that they are provided with the best possible learning environment for their particular learning style.

Next, I’d like to return to UMSL or Maryville to earn my Reading Specialist certification. I am so thankful to Dr. Aulgur, Dr. Cowles, and all of the rest of the fabulous Education department who helped me get where I am today!

Westminster was the perfect choice for me. I was originally referred to Westminster because of their fantastic reputation for helping students through the Learning Opportunities Center. I have a learning disability, and I was looking for a school that would provide me with academic support. I knew I wanted to become a teacher to help students with learning differences, but was hesitant that it wasn’t possible because of my own struggles.

When I first met with the Education professors to express interest in teaching, I explained my situation. No one batted an eye. My professors believed in me 100% and never allowed me to believe that I wasn’t as capable as each of my peers. I found great success academically with the support of Tirzah and Karen in the Learning Opportunities Center, and I am so proud that I can pass along that same help today to my own students.

I wasn’t just a number at Westminster, and I found a great sense of belonging when each of my professors knew me by name. Westminster’s Education Department helped me feel prepared, confident, and eager to enter the teaching profession. A family friend expressed interest in touring Westminster this past spring. I accompanied her to the Junior Day on campus, and I was so incredibly proud to show her all that Westminster has to offer.

I know that I would not be where I am today if it were not for my Westminster experience.
