Schedule for Churchill Fellows Weekend Available Now
A distinguished panel of experts will discuss the legal, ethical and economic challenges of national security in today’s complex world on March 14 and March 15 during Churchill Fellows Weekend at Westminster College.
Churchill Fellows Weekend will include a variety of activities, including panel discussions and presentations, and the induction of new Churchill Fellows. Panel discussions and exhibits are free and open to the public, but registration is required for Saturday’s dinner and Sunday’s Churchill Fellows Brunch. Saturday, March 14
Panel Discussion: “An Overwhelming Assurance of Security”
The annual event begins at 3 p.m. Saturday with an hour-long panel discussion in the Church of St. Mary, the Virgin, Aldermanbury, on Westminster’s campus. It will feature the Honorable Michael Y. Scudder Jr., a U. S. appellate judge in Chicago; Navy Admiral (Ret) Michael T. Franken; U.S. Army Lt. Gen (Ret) Richard Harding; retired CIA officer Jan P. Herring, a Fulton native; and Dr. Tobias T. Gibson, the John Langton Professor of Legal Studies and Political Science at Westminster College.
They will explore the ethical, legal and economic challenges of national security in a program titled “An Overwhelming Assurance of Security?”
Talk: “The Sinews of Peace: Power of Prose”
That panel will be followed by a talk led by Churchill Fellow Timothy Riley, the Sandra L. and Monroe E. Trout Director and Chief Curator of America’s National Churchill Museum, titled “The Sinews of Peace: Power of Prose.” It will take place from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. in the Anson Cutts Gallery in America’s National Churchill Museum on Westminster’s campus.
Attendees will examine the original, near-final draft of former British Prime Minister Winston S. Churchill’s “Sinews of Peace” address, also known as his “Iron Curtain” speech, from the Museum’s archive.
Keynote Address
At 6 p.m., Appellate Judge Scudder will deliver a keynote address titled “The Division of American War Power: Divining Constitutional Meaning from Original Design, History and Practice” during a Dinner with Churchill in Westminster’s Historic Gymnasium, where the 20th century’s greatest statesman delivered his now-famous speech 74 years ago.
Nightcap
At 9 p.m., America’s National Churchill Museum will host A Nightcap at the Museum: Cordials and Conversation.
Sunday, March 15
Service of Remembrance
On Sunday, March 15, the day will begin at 9 a.m. with A Service of Remembrance in the Church of St. Mary the Virgin, Aldermanbury. This ecumenical service will honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice at home and abroad for the security of the United States.
Churchill Fellows Brunch and Program
The service will be followed at 10 a.m. with a Churchill Fellows Brunch and Program — “Does Churchill Matter Today?” — in the Historic Gymnasium. The program also will feature live video participation with special guests from the United Kingdom.
Churchill Fellows Induction
At 12:30 p.m., six new members nominated by Westminster College’s Board of Trustees will be inducted into the Association of Churchill Fellows. The Association is an honorary society of men and women who are dedicated to the development and use of America’s National Churchill Museum. (The inductees will be named later.)
35th Enid and R. Crosby Kemper Lecture
Immediately following the induction, Admiral Franken will deliver the 35th Enid and R. Crosby Kemper Lecture, which was established by a grant from the Enid and R. Crosby Kemper Foundation of Kansas City, MO. The grant is intended to provide for lectures by authorities on history, Winston Churchill and Churchill’s legacy in today’s world.
America’s National Churchill Museum is the only museum in North America dedicated to commemorating the life and times of Churchill, the statesman’s achievements, and Churchill’s legacy of principled leadership.
