From the US Navy to Westmo: Chad Doebelin ’17 (a Power in Purpose Profile)

Chad Doebelin ’17

  • Hometown: Columbia, Missouri
  • Major(s): Computer Science and Information Technology
  • Joined the US Navy on October 3, 2000. Served as an Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialist, Boatswains Mate 2nd Class onboard the USS Rainier and later assigned to VC-6 Fleet Composite Squadron SIX during his second tour of duty.
  • Currently works as the network and system administrator at Westminster, while also working to complete his bachelor’s degree.

What drew you to Westminster?

Well, at first I didn’t think that my G.I. Bill benefits could be used to allow me to attend a fancy school like Westminster, but I discovered that we participate in the Yellow Ribbon Program which pays for the difference in tuition. So I applied and was thankfully accepted. I also have a few friends that have graduated from this school prior to my arrival who told me it was a great place to learn.

How did your service in the Navy help you find your purpose?

I’ve had some good times, and I had some rough times. I was able to travel a large portion of the world. I worked with some of the finest people on earth. I would definitely do it again, and I would absolutely recommend the experience and structured environment to any young adults who might be considering it in their future.

Serving in the military is a family tradition—my grandfather in WWII, and my Dad was in Vietnam. I was deployed twice in support of Operation Enduring Freedom/Operation Iraqi Freedom. The United States Navy made me part of something bigger, instilled self-discipline, and made me confident enough to push myself to do more than I think I am capable of.

How has Westminster helped you find your “power in purpose”?

When I accepted the position here, there were lots of things for me to fix, with the IT and Network infrastructure. This place has kept me busy!

I’m doing work that I love while receiving a high-quality education in a community that values my contributions and encourages my improvement.

What are your goals after graduating from Westminster?

I’m going to stay right here at Westminster and continue to maintain our network! I like my job. I know it’s weird, and it may not seem like a very lofty goal, but I always wanted to be a sysadmin—ever since I was a kid.
