A Churchill This Day livestreamed event will take place at 12 p.m. on Dec. 21, 2020, on the Facebook and YouTube pages of America’s National Churchill Museum. Speakers will include Paul Sparrow, Director of the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum, and Timothy Riley, the Sandra L. and Monroe E. Trout Director and Chief Curator of America’s National Churchill Museum.
The 37th annual Lessons & Carols ceremony will be pre-recorded in a socially distanced, COVID-safe environment and posted on the Facebook and YouTube pages of both America’s National Churchill Museum and Westminster College on Dec. 29, 2020. This year’s event takes place on the 80th anniversary of the Second Great Fire of London, when the Church of St. Mary the Virgin, Aldermanbury, was bombed during World War II. Patterned after the Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols at Cambridge University, England, the annual Lessons & Carols service at Westminster includes the reading of nine scriptures pertaining to the Christmas story. This year, carols will be prerecorded and performed by area musicians. The event is co-sponsored by the Center for Faith and Service and America’s National Churchill Museum.
Dr. Tobias Gibson and Political Science major Jakob Gibson, ’22, co-authored an article published Dec. 11, 2020, in The Cipher Brief, a well-respected national security publication. Gibson previously co-authored an op-ed with Jakob on Nov. 20, 2020, in the Columbia Missourian and with Blaine Ravert, ’24, on Dec. 3, 2020, in the same publication. All three articles are examples of the many unique collaborative opportunities taking place regularly between faculty and students at Westminster.
An informational meeting on the Westminster Bar Association (WBA) took place on December 10 to discuss the future of the organization and the successes of the College’s Pre-Law Program. The WBA is a new organization that has grown to more than 200 members in the past year. To join the Bar Association, fill out the registration form, or contact the Alumni Office at alumni@wcmo.edu.
On Nov. 11, 2020, Westminster conducted a soft opening of its new Veterans Memorial and Museum in Hunter Activity Center. Read the press release about the event on our news site.
Members of the campus chapter of Phi Alpha Delta (PAD), an international law fraternity, cleaned Fulton streets on Nov. 7, 2020, from the corner of Fifth Street and Westminster Avenue to Court Street. The service project allowed the Pre-Law students to get some socially distanced exercise during finals while giving back to the local community. The group plans to clean other streets in the months to come. The Westminster chapter of PAD was founded by Dr. John Langton in 2000 and currently is sponsored by Dr. Tobias Gibson.
On Nov. 4, 2020, Westminster capped off one year of celebrations centered on 40 years of women at Westminster by conducting a grand opening of the Westminster Women’s History Museum in the foyer of Seventh Street entrance of Hunter Activity Center. The museum highlights four decades of female achievement at the College. Watch for a complete story in Westminster Today in the weeks to come.
Davidson Leadership Plaza was rededicated on Nov. 4, 2020, after devoted alumni William Reller, ’56 ΦΔΘ, of Palo Alto, CA, and Mark Ruhe, ’76 ΣΧ, of McLean, VA, provided generous donations for the plaza’s refurbishment. Davidson Leadership Plaza, originally made possible through generous donations from more than 50 alumni, was dedicated on Oct. 6, 2001, in honor of former President Dr. R.L.D. Davidson.
